Once we have chosen a teacher and established a good working relationship based on the integration of learning sacred technology and developing iwa pele the next question becomes how do we proceed? For me the first step is the study of oriki. The word oriki from the elision ori kiki meaning praising the head.

Ifa teaches that everything in creation has consciousness or ori. In Ifa we align ourselves with the fundamentals forces of nature meaning earth air fire and water. In order to do that we need to first invoke these forces. The purpose of invocation is internal meaning we do oriki to focus our own ori and creating a link between ourselves and forces in nature.

In the Yoruba language this link is called ro meaning descend. For example in the oriki used by awo for possession with the spirit of Ela the oriki says "Ela ro sokale" from the elision "e ala ro so ika ile" meaning the spirit of light descents to the earth with the power of prayer, In order for oriki to be effective they need to be spoken on a regular basis. This is the foundation of the Ifa prayer cycle. Which will be the topic of the next blog post.
